On that first afternoon he stayed at home...silently listening to his daughter's tales of the strange kapluna world where people are always loud and angry, where they hit their children, let babies cry, kiss grown-ups, and make pets of dogs and cats. And that night I heard the figures in his restless dreams shout the English phrases with which Kamik, to impress her uncomprehending relatives, had punctuated her speech.
